It wasn't a rumor, Zach character was initially set up to be gay, that's why there were so many comments in the show. However, Thomas Dekker's (the actor who plays Zach) management backed out of the whole having Zach be gay deal so that little tidbit died out

Wow! I am very surprised I never heard about that! Wierd? So, Tim Kring and the writters really had the intention of making Zach's character gay? That is what I am hearing, right?

It doesn't matter because NBC said out-n-out that Zach was straight!! Damn-izle I need to finish this story!!
