The scientific/technical term for "persuasion" is "psychocoercion by extraperceptual auditory stimuli." It is the production of extraperceptual auditory stimuli capable of implanting a message in an individual's unconscious, which creates a compulsion to obey.

The production of extraperceptual auditory stimuli involves manipulation of the laryngeal musculature in a manner that generates overtones well above the 20,000 cycles per second (cps) limit for conscious reception. Eden McCain instinctively knew how to control the thyro-arytenoid, vocalis, and cricothyroid muscles so as to intentionally regulate vocal quality in a manner that generated specific frequencies within the 25,000-35,000 cps range. Normal phonation, caused by tension of the vocal folds to effect condensations and rarefactions of the airstream, operates within a range of 500 to 4,000 cps, with random and only partially controlled overtones up to 10,000 cps.

It is the combinations of overtones along with the resonating characteristics of the pharyngeal, nasal, and oral cavities that amplify specific frequencies that account in large measure for the vocal quality that makes each individual's voice somewhat unique. For instance, the trained singing voice owes its richness to overtones of more than ordinary amplitude. Eden's manipulation of this ability required generating these overtones without altering the basic pitch or loudness of her perceived voice. Each individual word or phoneme required a unique combination of perceived tones and extraperceptual frequencies. This perceptual/extraperceptual ratio (specific combination of perceptual and extraperceptual frequencies) must vary according to the position of a phoneme within a word, be it initial, medial or terminal.

Extraperceptual stimuli trigger so-called "uncommitted zones" of the auditory cortex and extraperceptual auditory stimuli impinge on the nervous system by exciting portions of the auditory cortex, which feeds information only to the individual's unconscious. Segments of the auditory cortex are actually merely unused, as opposed to being uncommitted. Those zones are actually committed but the information stored there is unavailable to the conscious mind. The psychocoercion messages, therefore, go directly to the unconscious, are not subject to scrutiny by the conscious will of the receiver and compliance requires no voluntary decision.

I think Eden was indeed on the list, by her original name. Remember how Mohinder claimed that he went searching for her but to no avail (as she had changed her identity). We can only presume that she was one of the many from the list he was trying to contact.

Wow, that was a very in-depth and interesting hypothesis on how Eden's ability works!

Her ability reminds me very much of the English illusionist Derren Brown. He has many times managed to pursuede people to do many things, such as accept pieces of blank paper as cash in exchange for a diamond ring! It really does have to be seen to be believed.

Isn't it stated that Sarah Ellis is on the list by Mohinder? Afterall, he got her name from the list and tried to track her down. The reason he couldn't find her was because she has changed her identity to Eden McCain.

That's what I thought, in "Godsend" I think Mohinder mentioned he was looking for Sarah Ellis to the police and that's when he found out she died.

Close. The police showed up at Mohinder's saying that they had found one of the people on the list and that he knew that person. They called her by the name of Sarah Ellis. And Mohinder replied that he DIDN'T know her but that he had been looking for her. That's when they showed him the picture, as he was like, "OH! I DO know her, but only as Eden."

Or something extremely close.

The moment I saw Eden's power I likened it to two Discworld characters, Death, and his granddaughter Susan, who have this ability (not including freezing local time, phasing through things and being invisible ).

i dont see how she couldnt just persuade sylar to shoot himself and do nothing else... she shouldnt have died that easily

We never found out if her powers were so strong that people could break through her "suggestions" if they had the shear will. At any rate, Sylar either did that or was just too powerful to be persuaded as easily as others.

ya Eden was great and it was sad to see her go. But atleast she went out with a bang (pun intended) and didnt let Sylar get her power.

Eden was a great character, especially with her backstory, I wish she had stayed on too.

I thought her character was absolutely wonderful. Her power was the "Jedi-mind trick"! As a Star Wars fan, that made me really happy.

I'm confused as to how Sylar managed to over power her, but regardless, I think she was a great character and died way too early. She lives on through Peter, I guess...

Gotta agree with y'all, Eden went way too early. Me and my friend were like, the Eden fan club.

It was sad to see her go, and I really hope Hiro or somebody will go to an alternate future where she's still alive.

Yeah, really missed her too. Haven't met many other fans of Eden. I wish they had made her at least able to come back, like Meredith or Claude. But at least they gave her a really cool death....

I would absolutely love to see Eden to come back, she was one of my early season 1 favs. And when she was killed off I was sad that her character was gone and not coming back.

But its Heroes if they wanted to they could bring her back from the dead.
