Chapter 1: The Ninth Anniversary

It was another dark, wet night, the moon completely covered in a giant blanket of clouds. The rain seemed to pour endlessly, just like it did the night before and like it did every night; the drains filled up with too much water and began to flood the streets of New York. The sound of the rain tapping against the windows of the coffee shop started to become clearer as customers slowly left. There was a young man sitting by the window on his own, staring into his empty mug whist repeatedly opening and shutting his lighter, for the last ten minutes all he had done was gaze blankly at the coffee stains left inside his coffee mug, with only his thoughts as company. He finally looked away from it and saw a newspaper on his table left by someone from earlier today, he began to read the front-page article to pass some time.

“Saturday - April 27th - 2047

Nine years ago today was the day no one wants to remember, the worse day ever recorded in history, the day when millions of lives were lost in the great nuclear explosion of 2038 it is today however we remember those we lost and how lucky we are to be alive”

The man stopped reading, folded the paper in two and placed it back down on the table. He glided his fingers through his brown hair “Nine years” he thought to himself. The man checked his watch; “thirty two minutes past eight” he mumbled as the shop door opened. He heard the clap of a woman’s high heels as she approached him “So can I sit down or what?” Came the calm female voice from behind. The young man sitting down immediately recognised the voice and rolled his eyes “If you have to,” he replied. The woman pulled up a chair next to him, wiped the chair and sat down “In fact, the whole tables all yours,” he quickly added whilst standing up. “I’m leaving.” The woman let out a silent, sigh, “Alistair, do you enjoy being such a jerk?” she moaned angrily “as long as I get to be a jerk to you I do” he laughed while walking out the door and into the rain. The woman sighed again and relaxed in the chair as she ordered a cup of coffee. “He’s become so different after his promotion” she whispered to herself.

Alistair turned his head to look behind as he walked out of the shop and down the street. He was surprised and slightly upset she hadn’t bothered to come after him like she normally would have. He turned back. “Its probably just because its raining” he convinced himself “otherwise she would have followed me out”. He ran down the street to find an alley to escape the rain for a few moments. After he stepped into a small damp alleyway where the rain wasn’t so hard; he shook his wet hair and lit up a cigarette which gave some light to the dark alleyway, he then began his short walk home though the back streets.

Alistair suddenly awoke to a sound of a phone call and sat up. It was morning; he tried to focus his eyes on the wall in front of him as he yawned. He felt extremely hot, he ran his hand across his forehead, he could feel sweat, he swallowed hard and massaged his neck. “Man my throat is dry, I didn’t realize coffee gave hangovers,” he thought to himself. He suddenly became aware that the phone was ringing; he walked out of bed and picked up the phone. “Hello” Alistair groaned “Hey Brogan is that you? Its Johnny” the voice said “Yeah its me, what is it?” The phone went silent for a few seconds; “you’ve got to come to the station as soon as you can, something really strange happened last night” but before Alistair could even reply the phone went dead...
