Writing his story in the sword and telling it to Ando via scrolls was a nice idea, but why make them unreadable, go to the expert to get them fixed and waste some time? That seemed unnecessary!
Unless, there is something that Hiro wanted Ando to do, and Ando cant read it now because it is damaged and he has to figure it out. That would bring Ando into the story. Good

the scrolls got damaged because they are like 400 or more years old, they deteriorate a bit (fade away), thus making it hard to read
that's why Ando went to the scientist guy so he can maybe he can uproot the writing and make it clearer to read

yeah, I know, but he did read some that were not damaged.
But thats not the point. They could have done without damaged scrolls and nobody would have complained. (This show is not exactly scientifically factual

)
They spent 3-4 minutes with the expert, so I am wondering if there was any point to it other than just damaged scrolls

With the available materials of 400 years ago.

It think it was just to make the audience more interested in the story of Hiro and possibly preparing for a great twist in his plot. Besides, it was funny when Ando asked the expert what would happen next and he answers: how would I know.

Yea that was funny or when the expert was reading along and it said dear Ando and the expert looking at Ando and he replying with: There are alot of Ando's in Japan

OK then, the point was comic relief! I still say that Ando needs to get involved in the storyline other than just being a reader.

1. the fact that it's old, thus damanged, makes it only realistic.
2. create dramatic irony?
3. intensify suspense
4. bring ando into the story
i think ?
