Jeff Jensen, an EW senior writer, has been despondent since the cancellation of ''Twin Peaks''

On the chilly Monday morning that Hollywood's writers went on strike, Heroes creator Tim Kring called from the streets outside the Hollywood studio where his NBC series is shot. ''Yes, I'm picketing my own show,'' says the 50-year-old writer-producer. ''So surreal.''

But Kring wasn't calling to discuss labor woes — he was calling to explain why Heroes, suffering a creative decline and a 15 percent ratings drop from the same period last year, went from Human Torch hot to Iceman cold. The good news? A turnaround appears to be under way. After weeks of sluggish storytelling, the Nov. 5 episode recaptured some of last season's fanciful energy. We've also seen the next two episodes — and we like them, too. The cliff-hangers are back. Narrative purpose has been discovered. Old favorites like Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) and Horn-Rimmed Glasses (Jack Coleman) take center stage. Even more encouraging: Kring himself is keenly aware that Heroes is broken. Here's his candid critique:

THE PACE IS TOO SLOW ''We assumed the audience wanted season 1 — a buildup of intrigue about these characters and the discovery of their powers. We taught [them] to expect a certain kind of storytelling. They wanted adrenaline. We made a mistake.''

THE WORLD-SAVING STAKES SHOULD HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED SOONER The premonition of nuclear apocalypse created a larger context that unified every story line last season. Kring now sees that Volume 2 (the first 11 episodes of season 2) would have been better served if Peter's vision of viral Armageddon had appeared in the season premiere rather than episode 7. ''We took too long to get to the big-picture story,'' he says.

THE ROOKIES DIDN'T GREET THEMSELVES PROPERLY New Heroes Monica (Dana Davis), Maya (Dania Ramirez), and Alejandro (Shalim Ortiz) ''shouldn't have been introduced in separate story lines that felt unattached to the show. The way we introduced Elle (Kristen Bell) — by weaving her in via Peter's story line — is a more logical way to bring new characters into the show.'' (That said, Kring says a few newbies won't make it beyond this second volume, which wraps Dec. 3.)

HIRO WAS IN JAPAN WAY TOO LONG Hiro's (Masi Oka) time-bending adventure in 17th-century Japan — where he mentored samurai hero Takezo Kensei (David Anders) — finally came to an end on Nov. 5. But Kring says it ''should have [lasted] three episodes. We didn't give the audience enough story to justify the time we allotted it.''

YOUNG LOVE STINKS Kring regrets sticking Claire (Hayden Panettiere) with a super-dud boyfriend and forcing Hiro to moon over a cutesy princess. ''I've seen more convincing romances on TV,'' he admits. ''In retrospect, I don't think romance is a natural fit for us.''

Yet while Heroes has finally found some dramatic traction, this second volume is pretty much a wash. The Dec. 3 episode has been retooled to function as a potential season finale — a move inspired by the writers' strike and a desire to give the show ''a clean slate'' when it goes back into production for Volume 3. At that point, Kring wants to craft a rebooted Heroes that can attract new fans and win back those who've tuned out: ''The message is that we've heard the complaints — and we're doing something about it.''

I don't feel he should be Apologizing. I feel that now fans are going to want one everytime he screws up.

Plus, all shows have their mistakes; he should just try to make it better and bring his 'A' game.

Not everyone is gonna agree with what he does with the show; He doesn't need to apologize every time a fan doesn't agree.

I agree with you... not everybody will agree with what he does, and it's HIS show....... it shows that he listens........ I think is greatthat he apologized....... it shows character.... it takes a great man to recognize his errors....... and aknowledge his audience..... what better way to tell his audience: "i will not do these mistakes again.... I'll make new mistakes"....... :-)
Tim Kring
It did leave a bad taste in my mouth and now it is gone... The aftertaste is much better... I expected more from the first 4-5 Episodes...

I HATE THAT BLACK CHICK's STORYLINE! She is the new Nikki, a GREAT ACTRESS but a HORRIBLE OLD Storyline... I mean why are they re-telling the story of how she discovered her abilities that is totally LAST SEASON! We don't need that AGAIN! I thought their new slogan was "New Season, New Stories."

But yeah, after she finally got picked up by the company, I was relieved! I was like, "YES" no more of last season's discovering new abilities, I want to see them being used and idolized more often now...

7-11 should be good coming from Tim Kring, "...episodes 7-11 are the best episodes we've ever done..." (...I read it somewhere...)

So yeah... That's all I gots ta say!

Monica's storyline is just fine so it Elle's however he needs to dump those twins and kill them...The only two storylines he screwed up on is Hiro's being stuck in 1671 or whatever the hell year it was and the twins storyline...The rest I have no problem with...But it is very unfair to make us wait now until September 08 for S3 strike or no strike.Even if there was no strike he is still making us wait until next fall for S3 that annoys me.In my opinion..

Ok, like f**k!!

So what, is it now like 100% certain that this season will end next month, and that we will have to wait like 9 months for new episodes? ohmy.gif
That is seriously what the f***, I mean season two like just started.
And it's already ending? pfffff

I never seen this coming, I thought that season 2 was being watched as much as season 1.
I agree on points that Hiro was to long in ancient Japan ,and Claire's highschool drama.
But still I love this season more then season 1.
I mean Hiro's time in Japan was necessary because of Adam Monroe.
And I bet that West will play a big role in this season too.

Seriously Tim Kring should not apologize, first off it is his show, and this season maybe is not as good as 1 for some people, but it still kicks alot of a**.
I mean topping season 1 will be very tough no matter what, it wasn't the most watched show for nothing.

He should stop worrying about turning it over, some people thought the show started slow. So now with the new episodes which probably contain alot of action I see no problems.

Instead he should be worrying about the show continuing after the 11th episode, and not ditching us in december to wait another 9/10 months

Glad to know he comes to his senses again, because he had really lost it at this season!

i agree i think that maya and alejandro's plotline is boring (with the exception of Sylar's evil plot) but adam's character is quite interesting...

Am I the ONLY person who liked the slow start? People are moaning now that it's moving too fast. Can't we just accept that it's still a bloody great show?

I agree with you, I liked the start. I think that this season is asa good as the last and yeah I found some story lines a little tedious to begin with but I always knew there was going to be reason for everything so you stick it out and now its all coming together, I like whats been done this series and I hope for more new characters next aswell, we cant judge the story untill we've seen it through.
Merp
I've had no problems with the show, in fact I liked the pace it was going. People seem to want all action, and story-lines that only develop existing characters, but then we'd be watching X-men.

And I'm really hoping that Volume 3 will somehow be shown THIS year, depending on when the writer's strike ends. I think an 11 episode season would piss EVERYONE off.

I just thought it was slow............. i actually got bored in some scenes, unlike the first season, where you would be clinging on to just about every minute of it.
napoleon
i hope maya stays, i've always liked her, not so much aleljandro ( or however you spell it )
i don't know why, perhaps it is a secret love.

I never thought vol 2 was below the standards of the 1st, i thought it started a story telling sequence that i liked - a show where you had to think about it, answers weren't just handed to you ( any fans of evangelion? ) But its great how he addressed the issues raised by fans though
go tim kring!

he's got nothing to appologise for the storys were alright they just didn't fow right.
it's still an amazing show and as long as season 3 focusus on a plot from start to finish it'll be all good.
i have faith in him

Kring is right. Hiro did spend a lot of time in Japan. I like Maya. She's really curious about meeting Mohinder even though she doesn't know what Sylar's capable of. I hope she's the one that kills him next season.

yeah i know i think elle is a really cool character and id hate to see her go, but i think i was her dead in that preview thing, but i doubt they would show something as big as a charecter dying ( in the real storyline) in a preview...did anyone understand any of that?
