Tim Kring and Masi Oka recorded a special video message promoting the "One Laptop Per Child" Project on the 9thWonders frontpage.

Official OLPC site:

The goal of the OLPC:
QUOTE(www.xogiving.org)
Thank you for your interest in One Laptop Per Child. Our mission is to provide a means for learning, self-expression and exploration to the nearly two billion children of the developing world with little or no access to education. While children are by nature eager for knowledge, many countries have insufficient resources to devote to education—sometimes less than $20 a year per child. Imagine the potential that could be unlocked by giving every child in the world the tools they need to learn, no matter who they are, no matter where they live, no matter how little they may have.

I most likely won't be donating money towards the cause, but I thought the least I could do was promote it smile.gif

I think it's a pretty good cause, but it begs the question, why laptops?

Aren't there more impoverished people who lack basic necessities such as food, clothing, water, shelter, for example?

Why laptops? This OLPC is only going to benefit those relatively impoverished (ie those people who have basic needs fulfilled but do not have other privileges such as education), and not those that are in dire need of help.

But oh well, it's a good cause nevertheless.

Don't they need electricity for their laptops? I'm afraid that many poor children in the world don't have the access to electricity.

it is a good cause and the laptops will most likely go to rural school children who still go to school but lack basic necessities at home. it is a way to help people understand more I think.

I think that it's laptops, because the other Non-govermental organization are taking care of the rest dry.gif , and I think they are doing a bad job, they should work more angry.gif and people should start with voluntear to help other country kids with food clothes and water. And I think that the kids are pretty bored without enterteinement, now I'm thinking do they really know what's a laptop?
