Dare We Hope A Deal Has Been Struck...?

As the WGA strike begins its 4th week, I've been told positive news about today's resumption of contract talks between the writers and the producers. So positive, in fact, that I'm almost fearful to post it. But here goes: a very reliable source tells me that there appears to be a deal seemingly in place between both sides.

"It's already done, basically," the insider describes. That's because of the weeks worth of groundwork by the Hollywood agents working the writers guild leadership on one side, and the studio and network moguls on the other. I was told not to expect an agreement this week. But my source thought it was possible that the strike could be settled before Christmas.

Look, I don't want to raise false hope here. But this source has been very accurate in the past. The negotiations starting today will have a news blackout, so don't expect any significant leaks. But consider the real possibility there's been a breakthrough. Still, I must caution that this is Hollywood -- where defeat is snatched from the jaws of victory nearly every time.

I won't be getting my hopes up, though. I'm just glad there's progress being made.

Report: A Strike-ending Deal Is "Already Done"
Will the strike negotiators be home for Christmas? A "very reliable source" tells Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily blog that there appears to be a deal in place between both sides. "It's already done, basically," says the insider, crediting weeks' worth of back channel note-sharing conducted by Hollywood agents. "I was told not to expect an agreement this week," says Finke, "but my source thought it was possible that the strike could be settled before Christmas."

In other words, maybe, just maybe, TV viewers won't be handed a big lump of coal as this holiday season — at which time the fresh scripted offerings will really start to dry up — rolls around. "I don't want to raise false hope," Finke adds. "But this source has been very accurate in the past."

Is this what you read?
I really hope this ends!
travis
there's hope...but imma still pretend it's gonna last for awhile, that way if heroes DOES return, i'll be more surprised and excited lol
DoctorHeroes
I want this strike to end so badly so we can get New Heroes again!!!
23rd_wonder
Agree, agree, I really hope this ends soon... Too many shows were affected... sad.gif
SleepingPhoenix
From what i've read (deadlinehollywood, wordballoon, etc), even if the strike ends, Heroes wouldn't be back till Feb at the earliest. It was already (without the strike) supposed to go on break till January. But with the strike, no writing/production has been done on Volume 3, so it would be pushed back.
Klenotka
Better on February than lose half of the season and wait til next Fall. wink.gif I keep my fingers crossed.

Just a 2 month break would be a really good deal for sure smile.gif
Some kind of... season 2.2 ? Sounds nice to me :]
travis
so would volume 4 start up next season then if they only finish volume 3 this season? or you think they'd re-write stuff

Unless they reached a deal wednesday morning. If I'm correct, the article said, "both sides agreed to reconvene at 10 a.m. Wednesday, said a person familiar with the contract negotiations"...so I still have some hope.
Klenotka
Yeah, at least they agree with each other that they donīt agree with each other rolleyes.gif Thatīs something. blink.gif But in the article is also written that they will continue on Monday. I guess that nobody of them wants this to continue during Christmas. It would be too expensive for everyone.
Misunderstood
I heard that the strike was over....is that true?
Leroy Kincaid
Nop, they shall go back to the discussion table on december, 4th.
AMPTP as proposed an uncomplete deal... It seems that all of it is really far from beeing ended.
SleepingPhoenix
It will probably (ok, being optomistic) be over by christmas, because the fact that A) The offer was made in the first place and cool.gif that the WGA is going away to consider a counter-proposal are two good signs. Talks begin again on Tuesday.

It just means Heroes will be gone for a while.

Can't they just like pretend to fire all the writers and hire new ones, then when they're like "Oh no! Sorry Mr TV Man" they give them there jobs back and then they write scripts again?

No, because NO writers are working! NONE AT ALL. It's a strike! And besides, even if writers WERE out there willing to work, you can't fire someone for being on strike, that's so staggering unethical and anti-labour laws even McDonalds has to go to all the trouble of closing down a restaurant to prevent their staff from unionizing- you can't just fire someone for exercising their right to demand better conditions- if that was possible, I bet your work would be a way shittier place than it is. Everybody's would.

No they are not going to fire the writers they are the ones who are right...The producers are the ones not right they spent almost a month on their lazy a$$es dilly dallying on their computers instead of talking to their workers for awhile...I am glad they are finally off those Lazy A$$es of there's and are now talking to their workers.Hardworkers that is. The bosses of these writers are lucky I don't live in California I would have them told off and hung by now.

I have to agree it is better to wait until February than Wait until the end of September 08 for some closeure on their cliffhangers I can deal with killing time for a two month wait with cliffhangers not a 6-8th month wait.
Leroy Kincaid
I've heard they (well I dunno who exactly "they" are, and if it's for TV shows and/or movies) tried to hire European writers (who refused) and French writers (who refused aswell)
Maybe someone will have more precise informations about it...

Simplest version is to say that the studios claim that there is no or not enough revenue to be had from streaming videos and episodes online to give the writers a cut of it.

When a show is rerun on tv, or when you buy a VHS/DVD of a movie or show, the writers get what are called residuals. ie the gift that keeps giving. They are supposed to be paid for their intellectual property, ie the script.

The studios get lots of money from the internet, and streaming episodes, but are poor mouthing themselves, saying there is no revenue, and thus can't pay the writers money for it. Or they say that the internet is still too new, and the exact amount of money that should be given the writers is unknown, because they dont know how much (if any) revenue they'll actually get.

Theres also an issue with DVD/VHS residuals, but thats a secondary matter. Oh, and the studios are stupid and wrong.

Fans, I wish I could tell you what's happenin g, but I truly do not know what the future holds. None of us in Hollywood knows when the strike will be over, or if when and how many more episodes of HEROES will happen this year.

Let's hope WGA's Counter-Offer will be accepted by the Annoying Men too Poor To Pay......
SleepingPhoenix
Bad news. This from Nikki Finke, at Deadline Hollywood Daily.

http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/excl...hey-could-mean/

At the end, she predicts that after today, the AMPTP will leave the table and not return till February. She's been right about a lot of other things regarding the strike, so....ouch.

She also thinks the Producers will begin talks with the Directors Guild, in an attempt to stop short the power play of having both unions strike (the Directors Guild's contract is up for negotiation soon, and the SAG contract is also up come summer.)

I hope we all like reality TV...
Leroy Kincaid
...and the problem is that she was 100% true. AMPTP left the table until WGA accept unacceptable agreement.

Don't even hope Heroes back in february, season 2 seem to be over, rendez vous for season 3.....

Hate to say it but don't anyone gettheir hopes up huh.gif ...The stupid producers said that the talk was over even though the writers still wanted to talk...I saw another article at The Brothers and Sisters forum saying something close to that......"Brothers and Sisters" shut down there set yesterday Friday December 7th.... dry.gif

To these a$$hole producers the writers are beneath them they think they are cool s*** let me tell you...They do not care how this hurts the actors, writers, and us viewers cause to these big shots we are all beneath them... rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

I hate Reality tv except for DWTS....Looks like I won't be watching tv I have DVD's...But I wish I can somehow get to Hollywood find these jerks and go Jessica on their butts... angry.gif

except its only the producers who are "the rich getting richer." Writers aren't actually all that rich, as the money they make in the good years is usually saved to help them thru the bad ones...and there are usually lots of bad ones.

You're right, in a way. Still, this strike is pissing me off. I DEMAND JUSTICE. JUSTICE.
Captain Badass
If they need more time than that to fix this nathan petreli problem than thats fine by me. Nathan Petreli is like second in comand on the badass squad (I guess that'd make him luetenant badass). If they don't fix him soon, I'm gonna have to promote Future hiro. So take your d*** time fixing nathan petreli, but make sure when it's back, he's fixed.

Im really behind cuz im in england but watch heroes on the internet but whats happening with the strike atm? i wanna see volume 3 already!!!!
Nekobaghira
Nothing has happened. World Wide Pants worked out an arrangement with WGA, so that Letterman and Conan have writers. They agreed to terms. I would hope that if companies like WWP can find a way to make things work, the other companies could at least come to terms with WGA.

I wouldn't look for Heroes to return until the fall. I would like to be wrong and we get something in late spring. It looks like its gonna take some time to resolve.
